You have decided on the piece of furniture to accent your home and
you are saying," now what?"

 | Do you want to stain or paint your piece? |
 | Choose your color and finish (do you have a piece at home that you are
trying to match? If so bring in a drawer or door to help match the color as
closely as possible). |
 | There are quite a few choices as far as finishing products go (There are
water based products that have almost no odor. We also have gel products that
are easy to apply and clean up). We can help you decide what is best for your
project and be sure you have everything that you will need. |
How do I do it? What do I do first?
 | If you are inside put down some drop cloths or papers to protect your
floors. |
 | Make sure you have plenty of room to lay your pieces out. Remove any
doors, drawers, hinges, knobs and glass. |
 | Fill in any nail or screw holes with wood filler if necessary. |
 | Next you want to sand to make sure there are no rough areas. Feel the wood
with your hand (watch for splinters) make sure there are no fuzzy areas. |
 | Now it's time to get rid of the sanding dust, you can vacuum or wipe the
dust off (careful sometimes vacuum tips will mark the wood). Now that most of the
dust is gone you need to wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove any that
is left.. |
 | Ok time to stain or paint. Follow the directions for the product that you
have chosen to apply. Generally with stain you will use a brush or wipe
it on with a rag one section at a time. Let it soak in for several minutes then wipe it off in the
direction of the grain with a clean rag. The longer the stain soaks in the
darker the color will be. |
The stain is on now what ?
 | Time to apply the finish. Follow the instructions for the product you
are using. If it is a gel finish you will need to wipe it on with one rag
and then come back with another to remove it. Always wipe in the direction
of the grain to keep from leaving marks. If you are using a liquid finish
you will brush it on in thin coats with the grain (Too much finish can
puddle and run, this is a time for patience but well worth the results). You
will let the first coat dry completely and then apply a second coat. |
 | After the second coat your wood will feel rough this is because the grain
has raised slightly due to the finish soaking in. Take fine sand paper 320
grit (We can help you with sand paper, also we carry everything
needed to finish your furniture) LIGHTLY sand with the grain just enough to
smooth the surface some. |
 | Wipe down with a tack cloth again. |
 | Apply a final coat of finish again with the grain and not too heavy. |
 | At this point your job should be complete. Now it's time to enjoy the
fruits of your labor. |
These steps are the general process involved please read all the directions
on your finishing products before you start. If you follow them and take your
time you can have results equal to any professional finish.
